Letter from a New Resident
Dear expert, I recently moved here with my family, and I am looking forward to being a part of the large and diverse community. I wish to learn more about the rites of passage and traditions of Chinese culture. What should I know? Where can I go to get more help? What do you suggest?
Signed,

Expert Response
Dear N.R,
The World Cultures: China Team would like to commend your bravery and willingness to learn more about Chinese culture. China is a vast culture with dozens of different ethnic minority groups, diverse religions, and rich traditions and history. China has many unique rites of passage and traditions. For the sake of simplicity, we will give you a brief breakdown of these events.
Chinese culture considers there to be four key stages of life: birth, aging, sickness, and death. Each of these stages of life have different rites of passages that commemorate one's existence. Rites of passage themselves are considered very important to the traditions of Chinese people as they act as a connection between the past, present, and future. Some important rites of passage are the birth & christening ceremony, coming of age ceremonies, marriage, and death & funerals. Other traditions and rights of passage include families practicing Feng Shui, gifting of red envelopes, and worshiping one’s ancestors.
Alongside unique rites of passage, China has many distinct traditions. Several of these traditions include: Chinese New Year, traditional dances, Mid-Autumn Festival, martial arts, Feng Shui, Lantern Festival, calligraphy, Dragon Boat Festival, Ghost Festival, and tea ceremonies. Different versions of these ceremonies and festivals can be found all throughout China, especially depending on the area’s ethnic majority.
The most important things that you should know about Chinese rites of passage and traditions are how to respectfully participate and to have fun, even if you make mistakes. We suggest doing lots and lots of research, especially on your area’s specific traditions. If you do these things, the locals will be happy that you are making an effort and are more likely to accept you as a member of society.
There are many good online resources that you can use. Some resources that we recommend are ikky in China, CHENGDYEXPAT.COM, and SOHO in China. Not only do these links give more information about traditions and rites of passage, they also will provide you with essential information to help you get integrated into Chinese culture such as : communication apps, how to set up a bank account, getting a SIM card, how to pay taxes, and applying for residence permits. The links for these websites will be listed below. For in-person options, you can also visit local community centers, foreign/immigrant support groups, or your country’s embassy for more specific information.
When all is said and done, remember to have fun, enjoy China, and respect your elders!
